Thrift shopping doesn't mean going to Goodwill or Value Village! Those stores usually sell clothes and other items at high prices that are honestly not worth it.

When deciding to thrift, make sure that you go shopping on a day that you have no other obligations. Thrifting consists of time and patience, so don't expect to go in and out of a store in 10 minutes.

Depending on where you're from, the thrift stores will vary. But if you're committed and willing to drive out, you'll find the proper stores.

It is important that you understand how to properly thrift so that you save money while getting good quality items.

#1 Where to start?

Open Google Maps and type "thrift stores near me" it will usually give you a list of stores closest to furthest from your location.

#2 Process of elimination

When your list pops up, you want to mentally eliminate Goodwill and Value Village from the list. After that, begin looking for a store that is appropriate for how far you want to drive.

#3 Don't look at the stars

My tip is to not decide on what thrift store to shop at based on the star ratings, because it isn't the same as a restaurant review. In this case anything goes, whether it has one or five stars.

#4 Deals are steals

Once you've chosen your store, look to see if they have any deals that day. Yes, thrift stores also have discounts, it's amazing! The day you chose to go is critical because discounts can vary from 15% off on Tuesdays, to 50% off on Sundays.

#5 Pick and choose but keep and eye out

You're finally ready to start picking out items. When choosing clothes and shoes, it is important that you analyze each peace for wear and tear, price and brands. Sometimes you may find a Nike windbreaker for $5 but then realize it has a huge whole in the armpit area and it's no longer a steal, so watch out.

#6 Buy, Sell, Trade

If you're lucky you can find many brand items that can be washed and look good as new. If you don't like it for yourself, but it's a good brand, consider selling it. Online or vintage websites will take it from your hands at a good price depending on the piece, trust me.

#7 Have fun!

Last, but not least have fun, remember that thrifting should be fun and exciting. You just need to go in with no expectations, and even if you get one good piece, that's a steal in itself. Happy thrifting!
